Base first, always

The part of a wall you never see.

Every leaning retaining wall in Minnesota failed for one of two reasons: the base was not right, or water had nowhere to go. Both are decided before the second course goes down. Neither is visible in the finished photo, which is exactly why they get skipped.

What you are actually paying for.

01

Excavate and compact to depth

A levelling pad of compacted aggregate, checked with a level, not eyeballed. The first course is the whole wall — every error in it multiplies upward.

02

Drainage behind the block

Free-draining aggregate behind the wall so water moves down and out instead of building pressure against the back of it. Frost makes trapped water a structural problem here, not a nuisance.

03

Set back, course by course

Each course stepped back into the slope so the wall leans into the load it is holding.

04

Caps, edging and finish

Capped off, backfilled, and the beds put in around it so it looks like part of the yard rather than an installation.

Also on the truck

One call covers the property.

Good to know

Retaining Walls & Hardscaping — your questions.

How tall a wall can you build?

We build the garden-and-terrace scale of wall you can see in our gallery. Tall walls holding real earth loads move into engineered territory with permits and drainage design — if your slope needs that, we will tell you rather than stack block and hope.

Why do walls lean forward over time?

Water pressure behind them, an under-compacted base, or no batter — usually all three. It is a base and drainage problem showing up years later at the top.

Can you fix an existing wall?

Sometimes a wall can be taken apart, the base and drainage corrected, and the same block reset. Sometimes the block itself has failed. We will look at it and tell you which one you have.

Try it risk free

A 100% satisfaction money-back guarantee.

It is the promise Robert Diaz has made since 2016, and we have kept it on the site word for word: if you are not completely happy with the work, we will make it right or you get your money back. There is no version of this where you are stuck with a lawn you are unhappy about.
