When is the best time to plant?
Spring and early fall are both good. Fall planting gets roots established in warm soil with cool air above it, and gives the plant a head start on the following spring — but it needs to go in early enough to root before freeze-up.
Can you work with the plants I already have?
Often, yes. Plenty of jobs are as much editing as installing — moving something that was planted too close to the house, dividing what has outgrown its spot, taking out the one shrub that is fighting everything around it.
Do you design for low maintenance?
That is usually the actual request. It mostly comes down to fewer plant varieties, more perennials and shrubs, generous mulch, and honest bed sizes. Tell us how much weekend you want back.
